Some flashlights on my character (interview)

General Blogs

The following is an interview that Lena, who manages the Art Lip Fanpage on myspce, did with me in August 2010.**********************************************************************************************************************************Today, I'm so excited ...... I play the role of a journalist for the first time....I nervously glance at the clock, but doing it in vain, because the man, who is today - our guest, does not like to be late ..... That's why he manages so much! And now he is here!Elena:Hi, Mr. Art Lip! My first question - tell me,please, how do you like your fan-page? It gives you greater joy or trouble?Art:It is a good support for me, managed by a very close friend. I watch the comments of the guests there from time to time -and most of them are very respectable people who have my sympathy. Of course they are all welcome on my pages!I hope, the page brings fans to me that I do not already have on my other accounts here. Did I already mention, that everybody is also welcome on www.artlip.de (my main site in English language) where there is a lot material of me?Elena:Art Lip....What an unusual stage name! Tell me, how long do you use it? Why did you choose that - are there secret meanings to you?Art:"Art" indicates of cause that I am an artist - that's the easy part."Lip":Level 1:The tone of the trumpet is formed by the lip-muscles.A keyboarder sits at his board, presses a key and get's a clear tone. Immediately. Without any practice. A trumpet-player needs 2 years in average until he is even able to play all registers of his instrument. The lip muscles are very important for him.Level 2:In Germany we say that someone "risks a big lip" if he is too cheeky. (He risks that other people bash him and then he maybe gets a swollen lip). I can be quite a cheeky guy - I especially disrespect people who think, that they get respect when they threaten weaker people. It always makes me disrespect them totally.Level 3Art liberation - the liberation of the arts = independence from industrial and bigshots' interests.Level 3aArt liberation: my personal liberationLevel 4:An "adlib"solo is a musical term for a solo, where the soloist can play what he wants for a time.So under the line most of these words mean: that I am a human who wants to keep his freedom and independence.Elena:Art, I look at the photo of the young Art at age 10 ..... I think you were a very calm and obedient boy.Probably, you were well in school, read a lot ...... Or am I mistaken?Art:Yes. I was a friendly, optimistic boy. Everything was possible. I was naive.Elena:What is the most vivid and memorable impression of your childhood, which left its mark on your life. This impression was it associated with music?Art:No. It was, when I learned, that "The Christmas Child" was a fairy tale. That my whole social environment -everybody, every authority, the teachers, the aunts and uncles, my older pityfull giggling friends - even my own parents (!) - were liars. That - opened my eyes. Whumm!Everybody tries to manipulate everybody. All thruthes are legends. All legends are manipulations.A surface is not the content.(The Russians teach it to their children by their puppets containing ....)For every one claiming to be holy - look under his coat.Organized "Religions" - Ha !It's unbelievable why they have followers.Have they forgotten when the fake was uncovered?"Authorities" are to be mistrusted.Teachers: Liars.Doctors: Liars.Politicians: Liars.Friendly words - what was the interest behind them? You get a gift? Someone wants to manipulate you.Your friends: look what they do - not what they say.The only real is what survives your very, very close look. From all sides - looking inside too. Therefore it is very hard to become my real friend.Everyone is tested for lies. Always.Elena:I know ,that at the age of ten you had already firmly decided to become an artist ..... How came this desire? Your parents were musicians?Art: At first I wanted to become a cook - until I discovered that potatoes have to be cut of their shells. Then, after school, I learned the profession of a photographer. My first master lost 8 out of 10 apprentices in their first year of practice each. He lost me too and I went to another. My family was flooded by musical people on both parents's sides. On my mothers' side nearly everyone of my uncles and aunts is singing in some choir. One nephew from that side is a saxplayer, another drummer. On my fathers side I have an opera singer in the ancestral line. My father played the organ in church on sundays and we lived always close to churchbells that ringed me awake in the mornings. But when my father tried to teach me piano he couldn't convince me - he couldn't play The Beatles. The servants of Church showed me their real nature by their behaviours - so church lost me too.I did my first experiments with a tape recorder of my father when I was that nice boy on the picture. 8 or 1o years old. I sang into tin-cans for the flanging effects and in the bathroom of cause for the reverbElena:What attracted you to this profession, the opportunity to become famous or solely - your love for music?Art:At the beginning, when I really started, I wanted of cause fame. I was round about 27 - that's quite late for a start. But don't forget, that I had learned the profession of a photographer and of cause I had a girlfriend whom I married. And, and, and.I set the goal for myself to live on music when I'd reached the age of 40. I missed that goal. And draw the consequences: no music for the next ten years. Well - privately it didn't stop totally - it was dripping slowly like drops in a cave. But no bands. I stopped.Round about 2005, I started again. It's the thing I do best. The talent should not be wasted. Fame - no fame. Phhh...I wouldn't reject fame - but it is not the important. I play what I feel. I must play.Elena:You are an ambitious person?Art:I am not ambitious in the sense that I want to be the boss of someone. But I do all I can do, to get the best out of what seems to be my destiny: to be a muscian.Elena:Tell me, what is inspiration? It comes by itself or it's arrival is usually associated with some kind of emotional experiences, strong impressions? Is it possible to artificially create a inspiration?Art:Real inspiration comes like a flash over me. Like Satori. The experiences and emotions are always part of my music. It is not possible to create an inspiration. But: Like a good actor a musician can call his emotions by linking them to memories. There are a lot of parallels between musicians and actors. Especially if you are a singer and frontman. And: The act of making music is a moving splinter of time in absolutely timeless presence. It's like bow-shooting and Zen. Music performing is an act of Zen.Elena:How often are you satisfied with yourself? On what does it depend?Art:I am satisfied when a musical work is done the way I imagined it.I am more satisfied if this is still so after some days (I wait some days after the first mix to controll the impact on me).I am satisfied when people love it and give me applauding comments.I am feeling like the happiest man in the world when I am live on stage and many people listen. You looked for a another kind of answer? Here it is: at the moment I am most of the time satisfied, because I do what I do best and what I like.Elena:Where came these quite exotic aspects from that your music often has? It came gradually, or you from the very beginning of your creative activities liked these styles?Art:I started with listening to Jimi Hendrix (still a big fan of his long live soli), Black Sabbath, but also quite experimental German Kraut of the 70s like Amon Düül II. James Brown. Blues. African Grooves. The blacker the groove- the better.Later I began to listen to Jazz and Postpunk at the same time. I always heard John Peels Music (a British radio moderator who mixed Reggae, Dub and Postpunk of the weirdest. (This very respectable man is dead - to my sorry)Then I heard Miles Davis for the first time when I was 30. It struck me like an axe. It was a track called "Red China Blues". The sound was like a lead-guitar a little bit - but still different to a guitar (Miles used a wahwah-pedal and a guitar-amplifier to get that sound at that time).I wanted to play like that ! I bought a trumpet immediately. So the answer to your question is: I always was interested in the very special and the very emotional. The rest came gradually.Elena:In your songs you often talk about the problems of the modern world, it's imperfections ...... Do you think, that any art must have a purpose-fight against evil and injustice?Do you think, this is the main purpose of your creativity? How do you think, your art has reached this goal? If yes, then how ....?Art:No, I don't think that every art must have this. What every good music MUST have is one of three things:Emotional impact on you, grooving and making your body want to dance,or interesting sophisticated detail for the mind. The ideal is of course to get it all in one song. But I am aware of what is happening around me and I hate manipulation of weaker people by strong .ahm.. ass...h..Ah...mhhmm... That mirrors in my music very often but not always.Elena:What are the most important qualities that should have a real musician?Art:He must be able to express his emotions in a way, that he plays on the emotions of the listener like on an instrument. That is the ultimate goal. I let my emotions reverb in your soul. Then of course he needs an ear for time and harmonies. He must practice and have discipline for that. And - very important - he must have fantasy.Elena:What are the most important rules, that you are guided by in your live ?Art: Fairness. Protect the weak - kick the strong into their b....Elena:-If you had a chance to start all over again in your life, what three mistakes you would have tried to avoid ?Art:Oooi-Oooi-OOOi. That is deep.I really don't know - our old mistakes are our strong points later. If we learn from them.If I had a timemachine and could travel to my childhood and give my younger self advices:- I would tell him not to listen to group pressure of "comrades" calling him lame if he did't follow their rules. All these strong thugs of the youth become loosers later in life.- I would tell him about women and how they think. Love ist the best you can get - and the biggest pain if hurt.I only have this 2 answers - no other mistakes.Elena:And one more question from a very lightweighted extremely frivolous woman managing your fan page!If you had 1 year to go live on a desert island ...... And only three things you can take with you! What would you take ??????"The computer" can not be mentioned here !!!!!!!!Art:Can I take you with me?Elena:Right now? Yes!!!!!!! And we successfully prepare our next interview there .... I think, it will be very interesting ....
