Chad Oliver: "Unearthly neighbours", 1960 Novels always mirror their time of writing in anachronisms. Here there are some minor, other ideas are quite universal and while I personally do not believe in aliens to look like humans, here this is used as a basic hyphothesis. The kind of spaceflight described is some of these universals, the idea, that most cultures will not survive their inner contradictions is another: with high credibility. But this is not a distopy: the novel ends with hope:).Quite unique is the means of time-travelling used here. Most of the novel is dedicated to social interactions.

Neal Stephenson: "Snow Crash", 1992 Novels always mirror their time of writing in anachronisms. Here there are some minor. This is one of the best cyberpunk novels. What makes this book so interesting - apart from the fastpacing intro and the general tempo of action - are the typical Stephenson well-researched scientific topics: Neuro Linguistic Programing and the history of monotheistic religions starting with Sumer. Some of the latter is quite fascinating with not widely-spread-known details that I found stunning to know personally. Well - the author has not solved the underlying egg-hen-problem in my eyes sufficiently - but the interesting details are worth reading and since at the same time most of the novel is dedicated to social interactions and doesn't spare with effects, it's never boring..

A.E. van Vogt: "The Weapon Shops of Isher", 1951and "The Weapon Makers", 1947The books should be read with the 1951 novel first, because that is the underlying timely order and they should be read both - because they are one story under the line. Novels always mirror their time of writing in anachronisms. Here there are some bigger, other ideas are quite universal. But - concerning ideas - we come to the point that makes these books definitely worth reading. There are lot's of unique technical ideas and devices - some very unlikely, some likely and fascinating. The obviously quite right-winged liberal van Vogt propagates the right for wearing arms in a society model that is quite unique and convincing (actually: the only convincing I can imagine personally to vote for the right of wearing arms). Downsides: The necessary technology is nearly impossible or realizable very far in the future only. And a somehow quite fascistoid seeming immortal superman rules this universe. Much room in the novel is dedicated to social interactions - but they all are quite non-emotional written, using mostly only one perspective: Mr. Super Wise Invincible Immortal. This plus some anachronisms ("atom"-technology) makes it sometime hard to read. On the other side, the persons acting like sterotypes in a 30s mobster movie makes the whole reading feel like a crime novel in that style often - what makes it also interesting. So: The Downsides are there. But the sociological solution that is used here is definitely unique and interesting. What leads to a "Must know" at last.

Ian (M.) Banks: "Surface Detail", 2010 Part of Banks' "Culture"-Universe. This universe is definitely my favourite uinverse. A universe without money - very believable.In "Surface Detail" Banks deals with "Hell" and shows that hells are the product of ill pyschotic minds, used only for manipulating people.Apart from that, everything one can wish from a space opera is offered here. Never boring.
