Tutorial-eng-14-The Singer

This site is entirely built with flash. So I highly recommend to activate flash in your browser.Or klick here to get it:)

If you hate flash, please go to here please .. That is html only, but of course quite basic in visuals and content .

The singerThe waves of fashion are changing continuously - at times there are more male singers "on the market" - at other times more female. Both genders of vocalists are egomaniacs usually - and must be to a certain amount. The main difference: women are much better in hiding their egocentric ambitions then men;)I said before, that the singer is the ideal arranger in a band.If he is the ideal singer, then he knows all instruments a little - he was seen striking strings on the guitar, bashing a drum set more or less masterly and he is able to create chord progressions on guitar or keyboard as a base for his songs. If this is the case - he/she doesn't know his/her vocal mike only - then the singer is able to do something the right way that is very important:He/she will not call for impossible things when he/she communicates with his/her band fellows. Because his/her buddies will stop respecting him/her after a very short time otherwise.Okay - I will stop this he/she thing now - it doesn't raise readabilty and under the line I am admittedly male;)The singer must - yes: MUST(!) - own a harmony instrument. I recommend keyboard - a guitar is a nice eyecatcher - but later on stage it will be very likely played by someone else with much more perfection. Most singers never step beyond the border of "campfire guitar strumming". Better you learn the keyboard right from the start.Because:there is nothing better to exercise intonation - than synchronous singing-along of scales and arpeggios (and therefore intervals) to an instrument. On keyboards it's easy - believe me. As mentioned above, we are not talking about pianists - we're talking about keyboarding. And these two things a singer MUST master:- intonation- voice produtionhe SHOULD master:- articulation (musical expresssiveness - including timing, dynamics etc. Being that nearly all he'll ever need to convince listeners).- language- stage performance The singer should work through my tutorial. He will find many usefull hints here meant for the soloist originally. Because the singer is a soloist too matter of fact. The background singer too cannot take harm by learning something here:)For exercising and strengthening the intonationis - as mentioned above - singing-along an important technique. But intonation is also influenced by voice production (I'm talking about the muscles and tendons in the game). Muscles need training - there's no difference to sports concerning that.To master that, one needs to "sing from the belly".Without long theoretical discussion - practically you'll gain that by practicing the following exercise:Sing long sustained tones - an open "Uh" (the mouth must be opened, the lips spread wide). The tone must last at least 15 seconds without any break. On the long run you should aim at reaching 30 seconds. While practicing that, these things are crucial:- relaxed body posture and muscle tonus- upright position - no sitting- relaxing of the shoulders and the neck- moving the hips a little forward (like Joe Cocker or a trumpeter that really "powers")Concerning body posture, women usually benefit from a natural plus: they ever since did that the right way already. Men have to get rid of their crampy, bowed "street-fighter" attitude first, that is natural for them when they are meeting challenge. And to learn something new - most men and women view that as a danger at the beginning:)Wihtout relaxing the shoulders you will get nowhere, dear singer. And now the unavoidable safety warning:at the slightest hint of hoarseness or "pain-in-the-throat" - stop immediately!!!Your voice can be destroyed forever!!!A torn tendon may be managable for a footballer - for the singer it's .....: the end!!!If you are in serious voice trouble:- be silent!- peppermint is poison for the voice!- prefer Icelandish moss- sleepIf you are a smoker: smoke less then.Known cures are also hot milk with honey (If you don't hate it like I do) and gargeling warm salted water. It should be natutal to drink enough then. That I am not talking about alcohol should be obvious too.
